Brothers Albert and Leonard Brutocao started Brutoco Engineering & Construction, Inc. in Concord California on January 27th 1967.  Their first project was a slide repair project on the University of California Berkley campus.  On June 8th, 1968 the decision was made to move to Covina and start conducting business in Southern California.  Their first project was in the Inland Empire constructing a bridge and channel project for the County of San Bernardino in Chino.  During the 1970’s Brutoco built bridges in Fullerton, Carson, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Van Nuys, Bakersfield, North Hollywood, Santa Monica, Cucamonga, Thousand Oaks, and Huntington Beach.

During the late 70’s and early 80’s Brutoco continued to grow and started branching out to Central and Northern California and into Arizona and Nevada as well.  At this time Brutoco was working on projects from San Francisco to Placer County to Fallon Nevada to El Centro to Camp Pendleton and in many locations in between.  To date, Brutoco has completed work on over 370 projects with a combined value of over a billion dollars.

Brutoco had been conducting business out of a job trailer, and in the early 70’s Brutoco moved to a small office in Covina California, and then in 1981, finding the need for more space, the company moved to their present location in Fontana California.  The Fontana office sits on a seven-acre site and serves as the headquarters for Brutoco as well as the equipment and maintenance yard.

Brutoco Engineering has always maintained a strong sense of commitment to its employees, the industry, and the community.  The company, when started, was based on these values and continues to follow them to this day.  In 1996 the company switched from being a family owned business to becoming an employee owned (E.S.O.P.) business.

Brutoco employees support the civil engineering and construction management programs at local colleges and universities by volunteering to be classroom lectors and sponsoring construction field jobsite tours for the students.  Brutoco hires three or four summer interns each year to work in our estimating department and in the field as assistant project engineers.

The future looks bright for Brutoco.  The past lessons of survival learned in California’s construction industry has benefited Brutoco.  We are continuously looking at the challenges surrounding us and are making the most of the opportunities as they become available to us.
